For Manga Connoiseurs

By R. Brown

The dean of English-language work on Japanese manga, Frederik Schodt has followed up his classic, Manga! Manga! the planet of Japanese Comics, in sensible type. Dreamland may be a series of essays that define simply what manga is, the otaku phenomenon, notable magazines, a who's who of individual artists and their work, and a lengthy chapter on Osamu Tezuka.

Japan is, because the author notes, a rustic "awash in manga." Of all the books and magazines sold in Japan in 1995, manga accounted for a surprising four-hundredth, or some 2.3 billion (that's fifteen for each Japanese person). In dollars, the industry's annual value is within the neighborhood of $7-9 billion. At a number of Japan's prestigious publishing homes, manga are subsidizing the a lot of serious art and literature they place out.

Yet, the $64000 triumph of manga "lies in their celebration of the normal." As a US comic artist notes, within the US comics are a caricature, whereas in Japan "it looks like most well-liked comics are...of traditional folks doing traditional things." Schodt goes further: manga are "an articulation of the dream world. Reading manga is like peering into the unvarnished, unretouched reality of the japanese mind." He concedes, though, that one should question what the general result of getting such a lot info transmitted via the medium of a comic book book-"that deliberately emphasizes deformation and exaggeration-has on a folks.

Schodt's understanding of his theme and of Japan are breathtaking. His section on Tezuka, the originator of Kimba the White Lion and Astro Boy and lots of a lot of titles, is very well done. The God of Manga, for whom a museum has been created, was an acquaintance of the author and contains several insights into a revered figure in Japan. Highly recommended-for manga and non-manga fans alike.

A Fun thanks to Learn Basic Kanji

By Oliver

These very little books are a fun thanks to learn basic kanji. every entry consists of one page with one to four manga (or "comic strip") panels. The dialog is totally in kana (hirgana and katakana, that are phonetic Japanese characters) apart from the featured kanji character, that sometimes seems a few of times. There are English translations below, however no "romanji" (English characters). And, the translations don't seem to be word for word. So, unless you scan kana fluently and already perceive alittle Japanese, these books will not be of a lot of use to you. they are doing have a "Kana de Manga" book, which could be a stronger place to begin, though I actually have not scan it myself.

Wish I Waited to shop for This...

By Ace

One of the firsts to seek out out this book was being sold on the 1st! Anyways, this book was alright. Shipping was specialized, arrived in four days... not bad, however it had been most likely as a result of I ordered it when it had been 1st being sold. Ok, currently back to business. Firstly, this book, wasn't very that smart. Not nearly as good as I hoped. after I finished it the primary issue I did was sigh, place the book on the table and said "Well, I'm done." nothing like I did within the previous books like, "My god... that was good!" or "Awww! i am Done?!" Anyways halfway through the book everything gets confusing. you will be like: "Wait? Whaaat?" like i used to be. Sooo in outline... I'd say.... "ehhh." thus if I were you... *sigh* i would wait 'till the book comes out within the library unless your despret. Nothing vital very happened during this book. I hate to mention it however... i am a little disappointed, and that i want I hadn't bought this. Should've saved my cash. Patience is vital, and that i did not have any at the instant I bought this :P purchase it if ya wanna. If I offended anybody, then sorry bout that, but hey. It's simply my oppinon ;P
